Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and experienced leader and manager with a track record of innovative and inclusive leadership. Demonstrated accomplishments in shelter operations, personnel management and financial oversight are needed. Personnel management skills that include an ability to work collaboratively, listen, have a positive attitude, provide feedback, delegate, make decisions, build morale and develop a cohesive team are essential.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, located in West Palm Beach, Florida, is a managed-admission humane society with 124 staff and a $10 million operating budget providing services to more than 30,000 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens each year. Operating continuously since 1925, Peggy Adams has benefited the lives of more than 1 million animals. Peggy Adams plans to open a new, state of the art Adoption and Humane Education Center in 2020 to better serve the community and help save twice as many lives as it can today.
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the direction and supervision of shelter operations, programs, procedures and resources as determined by the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors. Areas of direct oversight and management include, but are not limited to, animal admissions, sheltering, adoptions, behavior evaluation and training, client communications, retail sales, facilities management, and emergency/disaster preparation and response. The COO is responsible for the effective hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of staff in these areas. In conjunction with the CEO, the COO develops and implements strategies that support the Peggy Adams mission. The COO ensures a safe and operational working environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Continual progressive development of innovative lifesaving programs
- Provide day-to-day leadership and management to accomplish organizational goals and objectives
- Motivate, coach and lead a high performance team
- Foster an environment of teamwork, respect, empathy, innovation and accountability
- Leads the process of creating, updating, maintaining, disseminating and compliance to related standard operating procedures
- Ensures appropriate staff training opportunities are available
- Respond to program related public complaints
- Create and foster partnerships with outside agencies
- Oversee personnel related tasks including new hires, work schedules, work assignments, evaluations, termination and leave requests for supervisory staff
- Manages budget development and oversight for areas of responsibility
- Monitor the safety and appearance of the campus and facilities; coordinate improvements as needed
- Represent the organization with clients, donors, board members and media as required
- Actively participate in other department programs and projects including fundraising, marketing, volunteer and community outreach
- Attends Board meetings
- Work with staff to effectively integrate and manage volunteers wherever appropriate
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Experience in working with governmental agencies, community groups, volunteers and other animal welfare organizations
- High degree of competence with computers and shelter software
- Ability to operate independently with little to no guidance if necessary
- Considerable knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and city animal welfare regulations
- Considerable knowledge of shelter and office practices and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to communicate both in written and oral form; to plan, organize and direct the work of others; to gather, assemble, correlate and analyze facts and devise solutions or plans
- Must have the ability to multitask, delegate work and supervise staff
- Flexibility in work hours and schedule with the ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays
- Ability to travel to attend meetings and animal welfare related conferences
- Working knowledge of Chameleon shelter database
- Working knowledge of Crystal Reports
- Certification from courses associated with animal welfare and sheltering.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree (business management or related field preferred)
- Minimum of three years of professional experience in animal welfare and in a senior management role
- Must have supervisory experience
- Must have progressive career record
